So What Can A 05-06 GT Beat?

RE: So What Can A 05-06 GT Beat?
That's just a bad driver then.
With even a 1/2 way experienced driver in the STI, that scenario would
of changed DRAMATICALLY.
With the Brembos the STI stops from 60 mph in like 111 feet.
A lot shorter than the Mustang.
And with the AWD and boost in the midrange, the STI can go
FULL power AT the apex of the corner withou going sideways
like you would in a MGT.
Plus with the steering and handling advantages of the STI
it wouldn't be close.
Also keep in mind, for less than $1000 (downpipe & reflash) the
STI will add 50+ hp.
Sorry again, but the Stang just will not hang with an STI or EVO
on the track with equally skilled drivers behind the wheel.

Uhhhh....I ran all over an STI on a road course....
I was surprised considering the identical peak HP numbers, close peak torque, and the STI advantage of a few hundred pounds...tells you something about the benefits of a wide torque band I guess...,.
I was stock except for minor brake upgrades - the STI had an intake - we ran 5 sessions at Laguna Seca
I got stuck behind him a few times (we had limited passing zones in our group) - he could not escape me in the corners - even with the reported .91G grip and Brembos - I was tight on his tail except for when I was passing. I consistently passed him before the middle of the straight, probably doing around 70-80 MPH - The STI ran out of steam a lot sooner than 100 for sure.
When I got in front of him, I pulled further away with each passing lap...
I am sure from a dead start the AWD will give him an advantage, but in a road race, it was not even close.
The white STI behind my Roush is what I am talking about...

It'll lose handily to either a WRX STI or EVO

Yeah, that Road and Track driver couldn't drive that STI worth a crap.
And those 1/4 mile times for it were a joke. The Legacy GT
runs 13.9 @ 97-98 mph stock. Guys have gotten 12.9-13.0 @ 103-105 mph in
stock STI's. Evo's are close to that too.
But where the EVO's lose out is midrange pull.
See the MotorTrend article comparing the same two cars.
The STI out accelerated the EVO and their road testers choose it
as the better car.
I've driven both, the EVO is more go-kart like and a bit sharper,
but doesn't drive as easily and seems more narrow focused, it's also
louder and rougher.
The EVO is also $3K more expensive.
For $3K you could put an intake, full TBE and flash on the STI
and it would RUN away from the EVO. And you'd still
have a grand left over.
The STI tranny is also MUCH stronger.
At the track I've SEEN EVO's blow their trannies on SEVERAL occasions.
It's the reason they don't allow the car to be launched above 5K rpms Mitsu
knows it will detroy their tranny....but they blow up anyway.
Never once have I seen an STI blow it's tranny and I've watched STI's
run in the high 11's with their stock tranny.
The MotorTrend comparison is the December 2005 issue.
The EVO got around the 1.56 mile road course .39 seconds faster
which is no surprise since it's more dedicated to that but as the editors said
about the STI,
"More fun than the EVO, tossable and a more rewarding drive."
Evo is "dedicated machine, cool looks but more expensive."
MotorTrends times:
0-30 mph
EVO in 1.5 sec
STI in 1.3 sec
0-60
EVO in 4.5 (in 2nd gear)
STI in 4.5 (requires a shift to third)
0-100
EVO in 12.4
STI in 12.1
1/4
EVO in 13.3 @103.4
STI in 13.0 @ 103.5
Braking
60-0
EVO in 107 ft
STI in 108 ft
100-0
EVO in 306 ft
STI in 320 ft
Lateral g's
EVO .92
STI .91
This comparison test was done by Chris Walton...
a VERY experienced and VERY good driver.
Road and Track doesn't have anybody that comes CLOSE
to the skill of Chris!
As you can see the cars are so close it would ALWAYS come
down to driver skill between the two.
But again, at $3K less the STI is the bargain here and more
acceptable as a daily driver as well as a track star.
No stock Mustang GT could come close to these two cars and
produce the numbers they do. That's not a dig at the MGT.
The MGT wasn't meant to compete against these cars.
And in fairness, the MGT is thousands less.
Oh, and if you think the STI or EVO "runs out of breathe before 100 mph", consider this:
MotorTrend 45-65 mph passing times:
WRX STI in 2.5 seconds (requires a shift from 2nd to 3rd)
05 GTO in 2.4 seconds (doesn't need too shift to 3rd)
06 SRT-8 Charger 2.4 seconds (no shift needed)
The STI probably jumps the other two cars, but only falls back
when the driver needs to shift at 58 mph!
And look at 0-100 times:
WRX STI in 12.1 seconds
06 SRT-8 in 11.9 seconds
05 GTO in 11.7 seconds
The STI is only a blink behind these two VERY powerful V8 cars.
You would NOT have been able to pass that STI on the track
if the STI driver knew how to drive.

RE: So What Can A 05-06 GT Beat?
Well....guess it all goes into what everyone always says (including me): the car is only half the equation. The driver is the other. That's why I still don't understand ppl comparing the performance base of different cars using 1/4 mile times. Because thats really a subjective measuring stick. In the end, it will be the driver that decides how much of the vehicle's handling, braking, and torque range is pushed to the limits. I can vouch for this as I have raced and beaten cars in my 98 V6 that NO V6 mustang has any place beating on the street. Reason: stupid or incompetent drivers. A guy can be next to you behind the wheel of a C6 vette......if he can't drive it for s**t then he may not do all that well against whatever he's racing. He may even still win....but not by as much as he should. When it comes to two cars going head to head in a race (track or otherwise) it's always "any given sunday".

As you point out, the AWD gives the STi a big jump out of the chute....but if equal drivers were to run a 60-120, I am betting the Mustang will pass somewhere around 80-90 mph.
I was more surprised in the corners...that part I definately chalk up to the driver... Laguna Seca is really about handling....though I was running pretty agressively with plenty of 4 wheel drift...unfortunately overdriving more than once and earning a couple of meatballs for kicking up dirt.. [sm=badbadbad.gif]
I am going again in March, hopefully he or another STi will be there....or an EVO, or an M3 with a driver who's not a jerk....fun running with that group.

With your mods you should be running quicker than 13.9

Yeah, he should be running closer to 13.0@105ish. I trap higher with an auto, less mods, and 3.73s.
