so i'm driving to my girlfriend's house this weekend, minding my own business and i notice this (approx 1998 - 2000) BMW z3 hardtop (soooo ugly) shifting hard to blast by me. it was clear he was showing off - he almost hit another car while passing me up - but it didn't seem like he had that much power behind the wheel.

I don't know much about BMWs, but this particular z3 had M3 tags on it. does BMW even make a z3 M3 model? and if so, does anyone know what kind of chance an unmodified 06 GT would have against that car? whether i could have beat him or not isn't really the issue, as i wouldn't have tried to race him anyway...i'm just trying to figure out if he's a huge poser, in an overpriced, underpowered sports car - or if he was the real deal, and was just being an ******* because my car cost half as much as his.

If anyone knows, or has had experience with BMWs on the road, please post here. i'd love to hear your stories. thanks!

Even a V6 stang would kick a Z3's butt, an M3 on the other hand, would be close it's official et (2001) is higher than ours, it's got 33 more hp, but 38 less tq.

There is an M version of the z3. And im willing to bet it would pull on you since its lighter than the M3.

1999-2000 Z3 M3 (S52 engine) =225hp, 214tq
2001-2002 Z3 M3 (S54 engine) =231hp, 221tq

I didnt believe it at first, but there IS a Z3 M Roadster. However, it is a 3.2 c cylinder (i would bet its the inline they run with in the M3) but its the 1999 version with 240 hp. And its not all that light (a shade over 3000). You should be able to waste any Z3 out there, and Z4s no problem.

They did build a M-Roadster, based on the Z3 back then though that would kick our asses.

Actually, to comment on this thread, I had just washed my car on sunday, and took it for a spin. I turned right on a road, and the traffic going that direction just started to move through the light. I noticed a BMW in the front of the line. I purposly drove slow so he could catch up. As he was getting closer, he punched the gas and flew passed me. It was a 2000-2001 M3. I dropped to 2nd and started hauling. As I was coming up on his tail, he started gunning it too. Once I passed him, he was never able to take the lead. I think I had a good car length ahead the whole time.

Not a big offical race with the M3, so it's hard to tell if my stock '06 GT was truly faster than he was, or if he was just playing pace car. In my opinion $27-30K GT has a better price to performance ratio that the BMW's

The new GT is faster than the E46 M3, but that is also a larger car. The M version of the Z3 is much lighter.

Not sure about the Z3, but an M3 will take you. You may get a jump from a stop but he'll pull you after that...from a rolling start it gets worse.

In the twisties I don't think you'll be able to read his license plate.
