I am also wondering this. I think i overheard someone at the ford dealership saying that you can switch after 5k miles on the engine.

I'd stay with the recommended oil for the first 2 changes and then I see no reason not to switch on the 3rd...that's what I am doing.

The 5W-20 recommended oil is used to raise the EPA estimated mileage rating. I'm using 10W-30 Mobil 1 this winter and I'll which to 15W-40 Mobil 1 when the weather warms up. I would be carefull using thin oils if you rev the motor allot. An engine that sees 6500 RPM needs 60+ PSi of oil pressure to stay alive. Also, you can't be sure if the engine has .0025 of bearing clearance or .001. If your motor was built on the tight side of the tolerance, you could easily hurt the bottom end when it's up in the revs. Thicker oil helps allot.

Don't use anything but 5-20 if you want to keep your warranty. The tolerences are tighter, therefore the ticker oil will not lube the engine properly. There has been alot of threads about this. Mobile 1 is one of the best if not the best oil, its all I use.

yeah I also heard a 6,000 mile rule on switching to syunthetic, something like you need conventional oil in the 1st 6,000 because syunthetic does not allow enough wear for proper engine break-in. Personally I do my first change at 1,000 my second at 3,000 and then every 3,000. I'm prolly wasting money but I feel that a young motor needs fresh oil on a regular basis. Also the firts one gets the debris from break in out of the engine sooner then waiting for your first 5,000 IMO!

My $.02 1) stick to 5w20, don't run anything heavier. "Thicker is not always better" 2) Synthetics are great for extended oil change intervals. If you plan to change your oil every 5000 miles you don't need synthetic. Motorcraft 5w20 and the FL820s is all you need, at any RPM a stock 4.6 can spin.

The only thing needing a break in are the rings which are seated by the time you take delivery of your baby. You could drain the factory fill once you get home and refill with synthetic. Why though? Just run the factory oil to 5000-7500 miles and then change to the 5w20 brand that floats your boat. M1 is good as is Amsoil. Those oils you can run 15,000 miles or more.

thicker oil helps a lot????????? why do you say that? back in the old days that was true ( ( I used 50 weight racing oil in my 70 Torino Cobra Jet, 20-50 weight racing oil in my 82 Mustang with a 85 short block, but i ran N2o in the 82 and changed the oil every 1k miles) todays engines are better off with a light weight oil. I have a friend who runs in Speed World GT with a Dodge Viper(bob Woodhouse car is #13) and he runs mobil 0-20w cil.
i just changed mine for the first time and used Valvoline synthetic blend 5-20 wieght, the next change i am going to 100% synthetic, probably Mobil 1 5-20W

my 2 cents..
