don't downshift

Turns out downshifting does affect mpg. Checked my mileage the last two tanks. Got 22, then tried a full tank w/o ever downshifting (leaving in 5th then coasting in neutral) and got 24. I may be sounding cheap, but damn if it doesn't add up. Not bad for in town driving.

jrherald420..I'm humble enough to admit $4.17/gal has changed my driving a little when not racing. If I'm sacraficing mpg, it sure as hell isn't going to be when DEcelerating. None of us drive our stangs for mpg, just helping those of us required to run premium.

I paid $4.65 for premium here in chicago :(and i just bought my cobra. But i did't buy it for mpg. Were all just stuck paying for gas theres nothing we can do about it. Remember you got to pay to play!

rygi, I'm not surprised that downshifting affects mpg, but I've never seen it shown like this. good job.

I'm with everyone when they say, "I didn't buy my stang for mileage" but I'm also of the mind like you that I'll be danged if I'm going to lose mpgWHILE SLOWING DOWN!!

and yes, $4 gallon gas has changed my driving habit a little, too.

However, adjusted for inflation, gas was $3.11 a gallon in 1926, so we're not THAT bad off. And be glad you don't live in Europe - they pay $6-$9 per gallon over there. Except for Mexico, the US has the cheapest gasonline in the world per gallon. even cheaper than Saudi Arabia.

+1 on not downshifting. I don't downshift(when decelerating, not passing)for the reason of worse mpg and I hear it also shortens clutch life. Nice to know what I've been doing makes a noticable difference in everydaympg :D

Anybody know any other tips/tricks for better mpg? I drive without my spare or jack in the trunk. That should net me 1/2mpg than with it. It adds up :D
