351 Modified in a 1967 mustang coupe
Guys I need some help here! I bought an engine and a transmission thinking it was a 351 Cleveland. I just got some engine work done and it turned out to be a 351 Modified. I am wanting to put this engine in a 1967 Mustang Coupe. I have a few problems. The transmission is a T18. Not sure if it has 3 gears, 4 gears, or 5 gears. I am very new to engines and transmissions. Yes I am wet behind the ears. This is a new learning experience for me. Can someone please help me mock up what all I will need for this engine to be placed in my Mustang. I got the engine bores 60 over. I know I'm going to have to get new pistons, timing, cam bearings, etc.. the biggest question I have is will this transmission work with this car? It originally came out of an old ford truck. Just a general note I am looking for get about 500-600 horsepower and 400 or so torch. If this T18 will not work then what is a good Standard transmission I can use?? The T18 has a tall shifter so I know that is one problem. The mustang was a automatic and I'm wanting to convert it to a standard. If you respond back then please write as you are talking to an 8th grader because like I said I am new to this. Any help will be gratefully appreciated. Thank you!

You have a 351 stroked to a 400 thats all a 351m is.
As for that T18 transmission,, Im sure it will work and can be made to work in the car,, how ever that transmission is a farm truck transmission and first gear is going to be worthless in a mustang, second gear through 4th isnt gonna be a whole lot better either. That is of course unless your looking to pull stumps out of a field. I think that transmission has a 1st gear ratio of 6.32:1. They are great for pulling and farm work, and they are a good choice if your building a rock crawler, but not so much for a mustang. You would be much better off with a T5 heavy duty or z spec trans.

Thanks! So you are saying when I bored it over 60 that it is a 400? Also I just looked on eBay and T5 are fairly cheap. Will just any T5 work or does it have to be for a Mustang? My dads a mechanic but lives states away. He is trying to persuade me to said the engine and tranny and he wants to find a 4.6 or something out of a salvaged car. What do you think the best route would be? Keep in mind the mustang is bare and is just a shell right now. It needs new or used everything.

Another thing to consider is exhaust. Headers are a bear on a Cleveland in a 67 and a 351M will be even worse. Same for modern modular motors. A 302 or 351W is an easy fit. Even a 390 came in that year from the factory. Consider the whole package when deciding what route to go. If a Mustang II suspension is an option you can remove the shock towers but again it is much more work.

Sorry, I wrote that this morning musta been before coffee. The 351m is a destroked detuned 400 truck engine.. not alot of hp but a lot of low torque, coupled with that T18 it would probably eat the tires off the mustang but wouldn't go all that fast. Those engines have a long stroke and low compression. I had that set up in a f150 years ago,, it was good at pulling, but if I remember right it capped out of power at about 4500 RPM they just dont do well for muscle car applications. Youd get more enjoyment out of a little ole 5.0 in that car.
Furthermore, don't M, and 400 engs. have the 429/460 Bellhousing pattern? Try to find a Bell to fit a T-5........I dunno. imp
