Now i'm not 100% sure of this, so someone please correct me if I am wrong, but after 2020if a car doesn't meet the 35 mpg mark the most that will happen is that the government will slap it with the gas guzzler tax added on to the sticker price. Of course who knows, maybe in the next 12 years Ford can come up with a V-8 engine that makes over 300 horsepower AND gets 35 mpg.

I can't recall where I got it from or if it was a deisel or not, but I think an independent engineer found out how to get 89mpg out of a v-8 and it still had insane torque and HP so hopefully Ford can come up with atleast 35 mpg. I also recalling seeing that that 2020 bill means that a brand has to average 35mpg across the fleet, not just on individual cars, but i could aslo be wrong there...

Furthermore I don't think any progress has to be madeup until2020 in mpg. The way I read it was basically "you guys have 12 years to develop some engines to put in your cars that will make 35mpg by the 2020 model year."
