Six-speed Manual?

I know you don't buy a Mustang for mileage, but that is no reason not to enjoy it when its there, or even want it. It goes towards the affordability of the car. Cost of ownership. The Mustang has always been about bargain speed, and that is part of it, even if it is a small part. If I had the choice of two cars that I liked the styling of, the performance was the same, they cost the same, and one got 30mpg while the other got 25mpg, I would be swayed a bit. That can very easily be 80 gallons more in one year, or $250 a year more at current gas prices here (little over $3/gal), and about $1500/year total.
Face it, it matters. Its not the selling point, but it matters. Ignoring it is being ignorant. The interior is not what you buy this car for, neither is rear seat room, but the fact that the interior is so nice is a huge plus, and the fact that it is roomier than the Camaro has been bandied about by many as nice. Face it, the whole package still matters. Just because it is not the top priority does not mean it absolutely should not be thought of whatsoever or excluded completely.

They can still gear it about the same and you may still only need 3 shifts in the 1/4. They just bring 5th closer to 4th, tighten up 1-4 just a smidge, and give it a 6th for high speed cruising. Better for road racing, even better for drag racing (closer ratios means staying in the power band), and immensely superior street performance and economy, where 95% of mustangs are used.
Why would you not want this?

Maybe I'm just an old fart who's had nothing but 4 and 5 speeds for the past 26 years and I don't see the need, especially if it raises MSRP. I commute on a 55 mph 4 lane and I rarely drive much over 60 mph, so another OD won't be any use to me. Meh.......

I'll admit, I really want to see a 6 speed manual in the Mustang. If done right, it could provide a nice boost in the MPG ratings and offer better all around performance. But I'll echo mike's sentiment: if it's gonna push up the price of the car by a significant amount (1K or more)....I'll gladly settle for keeping the 5 speed.

Its not even the 6th gear that matters here guys...
its the actual ratio of the 5th vs 6th gear
What we need is the .5 6th gear
A lot of cars go to 6 gears so they can keep the gears close together to keep the car in the powerband...but its not really needed if you have a car with some actual *****.
