Default Six-speed Manual?

Especially with a 400 hp 5.0L V8 coming up, isn't it about time that they give the Mustang a six-speed manual? It would be nice to have that extra overdrive gear for fuel economy.

Why not the Tremec TR-6060 that's in the GT500? Has anyone heard any rumors about this?

while a 6 speed might be nice, the stock S197 5 speed 5th gear is a .62 vs the S197 GT500 6 speed .63. So unless i have this wrong (wont be the first time) the 5 speed will keep the motor at a slightly lower rpm then the 6 speed, so the 5 speed should help out on MPG just a little bit on the highway part of the MPG test.

Anythings possible at this point. I never would have guessed Ford would step up the GT to a 4V 5.0......but looks like they're on course to do just that. I've already heard lots of talk that the Mustang will be getting a 6 speed auto, so a 6 speed manual doesn't seem too far off base. With a properly tall 6th gear the GT's MPG ratings would definitely go up.

One of my friends father had 2 road runners back in the day, both 3 speeds, then recently bought a 6spd bmw and when he found out it had a 6 spd he laughed and was like what am I supposed to do w/ 6 speeds? I haven't driven a manual since I had half the gears. Thought that was funny.

Seems like a lot of cars are going 6 speeds. My room mate just bought a Carolla and its a 6spd.

They might do what they already do with many new models Fords and offer a 6 spd AUTO and a 5 spd manual like on the Fusion...JMO

Ford has not yet changed to an independent rear suspension. I read in an article that this would increase the cost of the cars about 5k each. They decided not to do it because they wanted to keep the mustang as an affordable car. Six speed transmissions are more expensive than a 5 speed. I'm not saying that they will never do it, but I think it will remain only with the Shelby for a while. Six speeds also weigh more, adding weight to your car.

You are always going to have fuel economy at one end and performance on the other. Balance it to your liking and have fun.

You don't buy a v8 hoping for good fuel economy. I didn't buy my car in hopes that I would get 30 mpg. Thats not why you buy a mustang.

exactly you buy a mustang to show the 4 cylinders that the bigger the motor the better not the bigger the turbo the better unless of course you turbo the v8 then the 4cylinders aren't even close

I know you don't buy a Mustang for mileage, but that is no reason not to enjoy it when its there, or even want it. It goes towards the affordability of the car. Cost of ownership. The Mustang has always been about bargain speed, and that is part of it, even if it is a small part. If I had the choice of two cars that I liked the styling of, the performance was the same, they cost the same, and one got 30mpg while the other got 25mpg, I would be swayed a bit. That can very easily be 80 gallons more in one year, or $250 a year more at current gas prices here (little over $3/gal), and about $1500/year total.
Face it, it matters. Its not the selling point, but it matters. Ignoring it is being ignorant. The interior is not what you buy this car for, neither is rear seat room, but the fact that the interior is so nice is a huge plus, and the fact that it is roomier than the Camaro has been bandied about by many as nice. Face it, the whole package still matters. Just because it is not the top priority does not mean it absolutely should not be thought of whatsoever or excluded completely.
