Just me thinking aloud, You think they are doing the 4 cylinder turbo to appeal to the Euro market since they are introducing the car over there?
That's part of it, the other part is meeting emissions standards. Ford has to make sure its MPG average meets that government standard, and offering a hot sport coupe is probably a good way to do it. I think it's a good idea, and I can't wait to see what some tuned turbo 4s can do, especially given the weight distribution of a 4 cylinder on the track. Rumor is that the 2015 Mustang will be lighter too, so a lighter turbo 4 Mustang could really surprise a lot of people. Since they'll continue to offer a V8 for the few of us who want it, I see no problems.
Frankly, sitting in LA traffic a couple times a month, I'm glad they have a lower emission 4 cylinder coming up. Love my V8, but for the person who just wants to commute and have a good looking car, the turbo 4 is really the way to go (especially since it will mean keeping my V8 alive). I accept that the pollution caused by my vehicle is less than ideal, and embrace more eco-friendly solutions for the people who think of cars more as an appliance rather than a way of life.
Edit: Driving a tuned V8 manual is a pain in the *** in LA traffic, so I guess it just makes sense to me. Love my car, but boy, it's just not the right tool for the majority of commuter drivers.
I'd be very disappointed to see a 4cyl mustang. Not to say a 4cyl can't be fast, I would just want to fire bomb any mustang with a fart cannon on the back of it.

4cyls can sound good when built for it. Especially with unequal length headers, like the Subis come with.
I would love to see a turbo'd 4 cylinder. I would buy that in a heartbeat! Better fuel economy and more power for a daily driver allowing me to put the '06 away for a weekend driver. I would be on that IMMEDIATELY!
