The 2020 Ford Mustang May Get a More Powerful Four Cylinder Option: Report

https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media...6yt3u2yisq.jpgThe Ford Mustang may be adding an engine option between the 310 horsepower 2.3-liter EcoBoost in the base car and the mighty 460 horsepower 5.0-liter V8 in the GT, friend of Jalopnik Bozi Tatarevic writes for Hagerty. This is according to his “sources at Ford” and appears to align with a VIN decoder document sent from…

SVO? Or maybe they're gonna call it the LX and detune the motor to 100hp.

If they are going to slot a hp option between the four and the 8 why did they drop the 6? The 3.5 6 could make more power than the 4 with less stress.

They really **** on the sixxer. They only had the 3.7 in it for 2011-2017 before getting rid of it. Maybe they could have tweaked it to get another 30hp/30tq.

The turbo 4 gets better fuel economy though.

In real life these heavily blown turbo 4's are not getting the rated gas mileage. Every road test in every magazine and TV show I've seen the mileage is worse "but you may get better because of our test driving" habits. I had an eco-boost F150 that never got any where near the claimed gas mileage. It ran really good and pulled hard but it took more throttle apparently to get there.

Grumpy Old Man 02-20-2019 07:37 PM

They get the gas mileage because they are smaller displacement, but only if they are off boost like part throttle cruise.

My point is that because they are smaller displacement they have to work harder to produce the same fun factor. I drive mine in such a way apparently that I'm having too much fun. The only boosted cars I own that actually get the advertised gas mileage are my BMWs. Germans know how to do it apparently.

Between German and Ecoboost, what's the difference? Anything hardware related or possibly just the ECU?

drhoward 02-22-2019 09:05 AM

Seems kind of silly to me to make a high hp 4 cylinder version, unless it was some sort of special edition svo throwback or something. Wouldn't you think that would cut into the v8 sales?

That is a really good question. I just think German engineering is superior. I've owned BMW's for over 25 years and their build quality and power is just amazing compared to American cars. I had a 1995 M3 that would do 160 mph with a 240 hp engine and blow the doors off Mustangs back in the day. Look at what Porsche does with it's little engines. The rated hp of a BMW M240 and 2017 Mustang GT are 345 and 435 respectively and the 0-60 times are 4.4 and 4.7 respectively. Granted the Mustang is a tad heavier, but that is 100 hp difference from a 6 to a V8. The BMW will get 30mpg on the highway. I love my F150 ecoboost but it doesn't even come close to doing what is advertised.
