The Navy has put a stop to all low altitude supersonic flights by F-14s (not that there are many left, they're all being replaced with super hornets) because they have a high rate of engine stalls. Something about the density altitude being too low for the engines to be able to handle when travelling at mach 1+
Oh, and they both got out and survived. I was on cruise (deployment) when that happened.

Amazing how fast technology is changing.
The new F22 Raptor can not only break the sound barrier, but "super-cruise" - cruise at well over mach 1 at low altitudes WITHOUT using afterburner.
