Default Newby with lotsa boost questions

Well I finally got another sports car a black 1996 GT convertible. It is a beautiful looking ride and drives great. I know next to nothing about Mustang performance and upgrades. I plan on doing lots of reading in these forums. I had to sell my awesome 1990 Miata turbo as we have a new member in the family and a 2 seater would never work. The previous Mustang owner has upgraded the intake (K+N cold air) and the exhaust (bigger mufflers). The new car is an automatic ( I know, but had to be done due to wife). I have also previously owned a supercharged Acura. My question is how does a stock GT handle boost. Miatas (1990-1993) can easily handle 12-16 pounds stock internals, with better clutch. I am looking to put a turbo or supercharger (much prefer turbo)on at 6-8lbs boost. How does the automatic tranny and ingine internals hold up? Has anyone done this with a 96GT with an auto tranny? What HP and Tq does 6lbs boost bring you? It is great to have a sports car again!

welcome! I can't say much about the boost questions but I have read in muscle mustangs and fast fords that 6 psi is a safe boost level on most 5.0's. I had an AOD in my 88 and raced it on the track for 9 years before I replaced it with a full race tranny. they are tougher than most folks give them credit for and with the lock up converters, they will give you better milage than you could probably get with 5 speed. I highly recommend you put 3.73 gears in the rear as this will really wake up an automatic and put put more fun in your family motoring! make sure you get a good child safety seat for the little one and raise him/her to love the Blue Oval and hate the bowtie!!![sm=lol.gif]

you can get about 6-8 safe psi on a gt, depending on the size of the turbo. the transmission will be fine assuming you dont put huge drag slicks on the back

Thanks. Does any one know what kind of hp or torque 6lbs boost gives you, or would produce with a cold air intake and larger exhaust(assuming intercooled if turbo). I think that the 1996 Gt is 215hp and 285ft/lbs stock(correct me if I am wrong). I am assuming that this is at the flywheel. Anyone who has actually done a turbo or supercharger to an auto tranny, I would greatly appreciate input from. Also at 6 lbs can I get away with better fuel pump and retarding the timing a touch, or do you need to go the $$$ way with upgraded electronics, knock sensors, injectors, boost timing controllers, chips etc..

it all depends on the size of the turbo...6psi on a big turbo could be like 15 psi on a small turbo...there is just no telling really...but you will need a bigger fuel pump, and bigger injectors, and a chip...stay away from fmu's

what are u talking about 100th....6 psi is 6 psi, the size of the turbo only determines where your power band is not HP or torque...bigger turbos can make more psi but operate at higher rpm, if u only want 6-10 psi get a small turbo that will spool quickly. Bulldog if u want to learn about turbos read max boost by cartech or ask your questions on www.supraforums.com Mustang forums isnt a great place to get good turbo advice.
