Newbie with a question
Hello!
My grandmother recently gave me her old hatchback mustang. I'm guessing it's an 85/86. It needs some work, and I'm thinking it'll be a fun project for me to "restore". It needs some cosmetic work, but the engine is practically new. The only thing that really needs to be replaced is the A/C Unit. It doesnt work at all.
My question to you all, since I'm pretty sure you know more about these things than I do, is how much will a new AC unit run me? I'm perfectly fine with a used unit, if possible, too. I'm just looking for a price range.
Thanks,
Savanna

RE: Newbie with a question
A/c work can be very hard to determine, pricewise. Itll all depend on what it needs. Itll definitly need a retrofit kit so you can use the new refrigerant, usually around $50. Then you need to have it diagnosed make sure all the parts are in good order. Worst case scenario.......Im guessing around $3000 for ALL new a/c parts and labor. Also, never take just one shops word on it, they might be trying to scam you if they realize you dont know much about cars.

Thanks for the reply.
What about just for the unit? I have a mechanic father, and my best friends father is a mechanic, too... so I wouldnt have to get a mechanic to do it for me, I have 2 in the family!

RE: Newbie with a question
Your a/c is compsed of several parts, so there isnt just an a/c unit like in a house. Have your dad look at it, he should be able to determine what it needs. Liek I said itll need the retrofit kit and probably about 2 to 3 pounds of R134 freon.
Basically, have your dad do this - retro fit the the o-rings etc. (call Ford they might still have some), fill it full of freon and the luminescent dye and check for leaks. If you find em, replace the part thats bad and there you go. Youve got a/c.
