newbie 1986 mustang gt converible

hey all. i just picked up an '86 in decent condition for $1500!
its a 5spd w/ 90,000 miles. florida car. runs strong so far. still there are a few things catching my ear a little.
i was wondering where i could find most of these parts and if any one has any recommendations on how to keep this motor running tip top! thanks for any input.

1) i need to replace VALVE COVER GASKETS.. they old and leaky..

2) EXHAUST LEAK....it has new pipes from the cat-back, but before the cat its a bit rusty and i definetly hear a leak..
what i dont know is, what will bolt up to what is already there?? cuz i have seen, equal length pipes and different length pipes.. and i dont know which one i will need to match it up with the exhaust thats already there...

Anybody know of any other things that i should be looking for with a 1986 mustang (mechanical)? any help would be appreciated.. its a nice car, and i would like to keep it running that way...

3)I hear a bit of a tap when accelerating... is this from the exhaust leak? or is it valve job time??

first off, welcome aboard. for valve cover gaskets, try your local auto parts store. if its rusty b4 the cats, you might be able to take it to an exhaust shop, and just have 'em cut that rust out and weld a new piece of pipe in its place, or, if you got the $$ just put a whole new aftermarket exhaust on it from headers back(including headers), unless it already has aftermarket stuff. mechanical wise, just look for normal stuff, brake lines, vaccuum hoses, spark plug wires, might wanna check out the torque boxes, to see if you need new ones and whether or not they need re-welded or anything to that effect. the tapping......could just be a bolt somewhere. youll never know til you actually look the car over. if it is the valves, be ready to pay a hefty price for the valve job. or, just a set of aftermarket heads. 1) itll stop the tapping and 2) itll give you more hp :D which is ALWAYS a good thing
