New Guy Here...1st Mustang...Need Some Help Please!
Hi everybody,
My name is Dan and I just recently inherited my grandmother's 1982 Mustang GL (with an inline 6) and about 46000 original miles. My grandparents bought it after being on a rental fleet and my grandmother drove it primarily in Arizona before she moved to Pennsylvania and then Massachusetts in the past few years. She turned 90 at the beginning of the year and in the past month she decided to give up driving. The car is in good shape with very little rust, only a couple of dents, and mechanically it runs fairly well.
My plan for the car is to keep it fairly stock (for sentimental reasons) and to take my grandmother out for many Sunday drives. First off, due to many years of Arizona heat many of the plastic parts are baked or bleached. In addition, the rubber gaskets have deteriorated especially around the rear window and in the automatic shift lever. My first task is to replace weatherstripping and rubber components so I removed the shift bezel today to clean out the old sticky gasket, but I could not figure out how to remove the automatic shift lever t-handle. I looked in many places on the web that said there would be a set screw on the back of the handle, but there is none on this handle. Is it a press fit? How do I get the t-handle off if there is no set screw?
Also, I would like to replace the steering wheel as it is sun baked and cracked. Has anyone seen one of the four spoke steering wheel for the 82 GL in tan? It has the cruise control on the top spokes and a fake wood grain insert around the wheel.
Thanks,
Dan
