Default noisy downshifting

Hey all. I'm new here so I guess I'll start by telling a little about myself/car. I bought my 2003 zinc yellow mustang GT in Jan. '03. It had 23 miles on it. Here it is 2 and a half years later and I now have a little over 60K on it. I've loved every mile on it. I met my girlfriend (who's now my wife) 3 months later who had an '02 yellow mustang (only a 6 cyl. though) but she totalled it a couple of months later. Anyway that's my story. Here recently, I've been having a slight problem and no one seems to know exactly what it is. I've taken it to a couple of mechanics who can't seem to tell me exactly what the problem is, so I figured I'd ask some real people. I'll try to explain this as clearly as possible. It started last thursday night. After travelling at about 65 - 70 mph for a little while, I downshifted to slow down and I hear this loud grinding/whining noise coming from my rear end. It only happens though when downshifting. As long as i put it in neutral and use the brakes instead, I don't usually hear it. I went and got it checked by a mechanic last Friday, and he took the drive shaft off and looked at the U-joint and noticed that there was a spot on the "yoke?" where I guess it had been spinning. He showed it to me and three of the sides looked fine, but he showed me on the one side where it looked as if something had worn on the edges of the "yoke". I'm not too familiar with any of this since I don't have much of a mechanical background. Anyway, I didn't like his analysis of it and wanted a second opinion, so I took it to another mechanic on the same day after work. He drove it, then inspected it. He checked to make sure that nothing was loose, and he said the rear end looked fine, but that it may be bearings in the rear end. Can anyone help me please?!

Welcome!

All technical questions go in the tech forums, so I suggest asking about your problem over in the 4.6 section. They'll be able to give some input on that.

Best of luck.
