Default Noob from South Orange County (CA)

Hello all.

I am the proud owner of a 1999 GT Convertible (5 speed manual) as of a couple of weeks ago. I decided I wanted to eliminate a car payment, so I took my 2006 Camry to Carmax and sold it. I planned on doing without a car altogether. My wife just retired. My office is 1-1/2 miles from my house. I have two motorcycles; a 2002 BMW R1150RT (with 140k miles) and a 2004 Kawasaki 650 KLR. Unexpectedly, I came into a little bit of an inheritance, so I started shopping on Autotrader.com. Lo and behold, I found a Mustang which appeared to be in good shape. It was not the POs primary transportation but his "fun vehicle". So, I now have a fun car and no payments! Yeah! After reading some of the specs, I have found out that this thing has more power than the last sports car I owned, a 1989 Corvette. Amazing! While the new 'Vette has quite a bit more, this is plenty for me (at least for now).

I have to admit, I have not been much of a car enthusiast. I have always held the position that a car is a functional point A to point B apparatus which can also be used to go on a date when it's raining. My passion has always been motorcycling and specifically motorcycle touring. Of course, you probably gathered that if you caught the fact that my Beemer has 140k miles (none are commuting miles) and is a 2002 model.

It took me about a week to discover this site and I found there are a lot of folks who are as passionate about their Mustangs as I am about motorcycles. I'm not much of a mechanic, but I have managed to do all of the regular maintenance on my Beemer. I have found that not only does that save money, but it also gets me away from the computer. Very therapeutic.

Although I'm not sure I will be adding a supercharger anytime soon, I do plan on taking a basic auto maintenance class this spring at the local community college. I am interested in doing my own maintenance if that is at all possible. With out last two vehicles being late model Toyotas (my wife still has her 4Runner), about all I've done is change the oil and filters and rotate the tires.

The Mustang is coming up on 75k miles and I plan on bringing it up to date, maintenance-wise. While the PO indicated that he performed all of the scheduled maintenance, he had no records. My gear head friend says I should plan on "touching everything" including belts, hoses, spark plug wires and fluids (engine oil, tranny fluid, final drive fluid, brake fluid). I don't have a lift in my garage, just a 6T hydraulic jack and two jack stands, so I'm not sure what I can practically achieve in my garage beyond the basic stuff. I also don't have very many SAE wrenches.

I'm looking forward to gleaming as much information as I can from this site.

Thank you.
