Hello I'm Jim and new to this forum. My girlfriends friends mother has a '05 with the 4.0 and it will not start. It's got 137K and it's automatic. I found all 6 spark plugs fouled out. I checked for spark and replaced all 6 plugs and still no start. The fuel pump works new fuel filter and there is voltage at the injectors and all fuses are good. I smell gas in the oil and was wondering if this car has a fuel pressure regulator?? The engine gas compression and the timing chains are not broken. If you let the car sit for a day or so and go to start it, it kicks like it wants to start then after that it just cranks and won't kick again until u let it sit for a day again. I've always been a ford guy and I know the last gen of ford escorts like the back of my hand! So I know with a good mustang guy to point me in the right direction, I can get it running again.
