Default I read the news today: Top stories of the day. *no politics*

If it's not politics, religion nor pictures of cats doing funny things, this is where the days top face palmers go.

Rules:
1. Post a link with quote from a news article, pic or vid of something in the news that just makes you laugh, cry, pissed off or sick.
2. No nudity as usual and no pics nor vids of anything disturbing. For graphic stories with images and vids, use only links with a "not safe for work" (NSFW) or some kind of warning.
3. ????
4. Profit!

This story irks me, so this is a good one to start things off.
"Swindling New York deli owners gave $1million lottery winning customer just $1,000 and then KEPT the scratch-off ticket for themselves"

I like the message of the company Goldie Blox. But the Beasties are right. They didn't give permission to use their song because they don't want their music used in any kind of advertising. I've read about their stance before in that regard.
I hate how advertising agencies think they can change a few words in a song and make it theirs.

Yeah... Parody is usually allowed though. Their song isn't being used, a parody of their song is being used in advertising, as long as the creators of the parody have given rights to use it is legal. And as long as that song is considered parody it is legal. If they rule the song is not parody and is instead copyright infringement then goldiebox will be in trouble. From listening to it I think goldiebox will be okay, it's amusing, most of the lyrics are changed... The issue they might run into is girls is used a lot in that song and this one.. they might determine it too closely resembles to original work.

Not if it's used to advertise a product(s). A parody on youtube is a different story. But Prince won't even allow that. If you use a Prince song for anything, even a home movie and it's on the internet, they'll pull it.

Remember that song Down Under way back like 30+ years ago by Men At Work? They were sued and lost because the flute riff is similar to the old Aussie song "kookaburra sits in the old gum tree". And that was just a riff!
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worl...own-Under.html

...and because it was being sold for years before the law suite, they get royalties for years of it's use, lol.

Compare the two here. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/telegraph...-compared.html

Using other people's music in your youtube videos can get them yanked (as long as someone complains) it doesn't matter who the artist is. Making a parody of a song is legal. that example of something sounding just like it for a song is illegal, like vanilla ice vs queen.

Weird Al always gets permission to parody music but he isn't required to. For example I remember Amish Paradise wasn't authorized according to coolio and he was unhappy about it. Al responded with he thought he knew about it and was okay about it. So weird Al wants to do prince songs but wont.

here is another example, ice ice baby parodies don't have to pay any royalties to queen.

oh here is another one, he didn't get permission from lady gaga (or she said no) but he released it anyway (weird al)
