Default Oil weights and change intervals.

Well im still living in the past I guess after doing some reasearch. I have a stock 97 4v procharged and im running 10w30 valvoline synpower in it. And also a 02 f150 with the 4.6 and running the same in that. The mustang only gets driving 3-4k miles a year but i continue to change the oil and filter every 3 months. Same with the truck, is this pure overkill. Also Id like to switch to a better base stock oil for the mustang. As far as wight goes I live in PA and just run the 10w30 all year (mustang only gets started a few times over winter) I know the mustang calls for 5w30 and the f150 is calling for 5w20 just seems kinda thin to run. the truck has 90k and the mustang engine has about 75k what do you all think.

My stang get around the same miles a year as yours, and I change it once a year. Yes changing it every 3 months is a over kill. Synpower is a really oil just stick with that. As far as weight you can keep using 10w-30 if you want, but 5w-20 wont blow your motor up, when the oil gets hot its not that much thinner than what your using now.

edit: Just let your car sit no need to start it up in the winter, that can be bad for the oil.

Hmm so i could get away with 5w30 even with higher miles I have some unknown fear of 5w oil. I know my f150 says 5w20 and im def scared of that, u think 5w30 would be food for the 4.6 in my f150 even with high miles?

I have 160,000 on my 2000 mustang I run 0w30

don't fear any number that is before the W its the number after the W that you need to pay attention to.

and refers to it's cold pour ability, or how well it flows at sub zero temperatures.

I also run 0W-30...do not fear the 0 or 5W oils.
