Anyone using M1 0w40 Euro?
Just curious. Cheap where I am.
High zinc, good pourability cold, higher viscosity hot. Seems ideal to me, 5w20 and cafe be damned.
Also might get rid of some of that cold start clatter I can't stand.

It returns great UOAs from members of BITOG.
I would stick to a robust 0W-30 for your application. There is no call for a 40 grade oil in the 4.6L modular. You will lose efficiency by using too heavy of a lubricant. Too bad Castrol downgraded their German 0W-30, that stuff was amazing in 2002-2005.
IMO, the best 0W-30 I have used to date is AMSOIL's SSO 0W-30, and I even created a thread about it. I gained efficiency using it (previously was using Mobil 1 5W-20).

The clatter is your vct. It's designed to operate with 5-20. Ford's variable cam timing uses oil as a hydraulic fluid to change cam timing. Use too thick of an oil and pressure goes up while volume goes down, not good for vct. You can get away with a 30w. I doubt the stock rod side clearances will allow a good oil wedge to form with 0-40 but I could be wrong. You have to remember that all the bearing and wall clearances were designed around 5-20.

The engine was designed for 30 grade oil, period! Ford opted to recommend 20 grade due to CAFE laws, and no other reason.
You, and no one else, will ever convince me otherwise. The reason being....
The exact same Ford modular V8 engines in Australia are all spec'd for 5W-30. Why? No CAFE laws in Australia.
OP, use a high quality 5W-30 or 0W-30 and never look back. Assuming you have no lash adjuster damage in your valve train, your cold start noises will disappear.
AMSOIL SSO 0W-30 made my valve train so quiet, you could only hear injector tick. I began using it in my 2008 GT 4.6L @ 30,000 miles. The previous 30,000 miles I used Mobil 1 5W-20, and it wasn't what you would call quiet on that stuff.

2008 GT - AMSOIL 0W-30
2009 GT500 - AMSOIL 10W-40
Motorcraft 5W-50 quickly shears to a light 40 grade in 1,500 - 2,000 miles. After 6,000 miles it was a heavy 30 grade. I bet a robust group IV/V heavy 30 grade in this engine would be right at home, and would not shear like the group III 5W-50. I stuck with 10W-40 due to Florida's summer heat.

This is the new 3.7 ivct damb quad cam I'm tinkering with.
See, my reason for asking about the 0w40 in the first place is because Ford is still keeping quiet on this whole cold start tick problem some of us have.

I'm just going through some options in my mind beforehand in case good ol ford decides the 3.7 tick is "normal" like they did when the modular cam phasers had noise issues. And, as you may remember, the tsb for that issue specifically calls out 10w40 as a solution.
In all honesty, I'm running 5w20 PU with 2 oz of xl-17 as an interim solution on my own and I've alleviated the noise about 99%. But if 10w40 is a solution to a similar problem, then I'd rather use the 0w40 as to not use the additive.

I've been keeping up with the 3.7L ticking noise issue that Ford told a customer to drive it until they discover a fix. That's gotta suck.
It won't hurt to give it a try for one change interval to see how it functions. Report back and let us know.

I use M1 0W-40 in my ATV, does that count? haha
If you were going to try something different than the 5W-20, personally I would go with a Xw-30 of sorts before I went with any 40 oil, like already mentioned.
