Different Oil Viscosity to (hopefully) fix Ticking
Hello Everyone,
My 1998 Mustang GT has an annoying ticking sound. Here's a video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCcSacQ7gfE
My issue is that the car runs perfectly, with no ticking at all when the engine is cold. When it warms up, the ticking appears.
I personally replaced every lash adjuster and valve seal and the ticking is still present.
I checked for the source of the tick with a mechanics stethoscope, and The exhaust manifold and the fuel injectors proved to be the loudest source of ticking.
My question is, could it be oil viscosity? It ticks once the oil is hot. I'm running 5w30 synthetic in there now, and so I want to try a new oil viscosity.
A Ford Technician recommended I put Dino oil in it for starters, and then also to put 15w40 in there. I am curious what every one has to say on this advice. Should I put thinner (5w20 Dino) or thicker (10w40 or 15w40 Dino) in the car?
Thanks,
DmD

Its possible that that can be an exhaust leak at the manifold, but throw in some 10w30 and see if it makes a difference, if all the lash adjusters were replaced correctly they shouldn't tick unless they are starved for oil, I would get a real oil pressure gauge tool and tap it in to see what your oil pressure really is running hot.

Okay I'll go with some 10w40 Dyno, see if that helps it out. I know I replaced the lash adjusters correctly, I mean it was basically pull one out, pop the new oil-soaked one in.
And yeah I will certainly check the oil pressure with a legit gauge, thats a good idea.
Thanks for the help guys, and I'll check into an exhaust manifold leak. One important note, the ticking is just as loud, if not louder, underneath the car.
I was also thinking it could be a clogged oil passage way but I am not sure how to test/fix that

In your video, you said the previous owner never changed the oil. How many miles did he drive the car with the same oil fill?
Possible sludge build up?
