Default Royal?

Hey all, I'm thinking about switching my engine oil to royal purple. Any praise for royal purple as engine oil? Wat should I get in terms of the number? (5w20-10w30). My car is an '05 GT. comp cams. Forged rods, pistons. That's about it for internals. I live in Arkansas. Low 20's at night. Highs about 50 during winter

Purple is good stuff, but I prefer Amsoil myself. Not much difference in price. With Purple use 5w-20. Amsoil use 0w-20 or 0w-30.

I also prefer Amsoil over RP. 0W20 in their ASM oil; 5W20 in their Signature Series. I believe RP is overrated.

However, the main reason for going to a boutique synthetic oil is to extend your drain intervals. With the Amsoil, I rarely drain before 10,000 miles. Come to think of it, it's about the same with my vehicle using M1 and the one using Pennzoil Ultra.

Valvoline has a new synthetic out now, I've always used Castrol Edge. My new 2012 3.7
has Motorcraft 50/50 from the dealer and is doing ok. Be sure to use a Motorcraft oil filter.

Oops. I forgot to discuss filters. The OE Motorcraft filter does a very good job but I personally don't trust it much beyond 7000-8000 miles. Amsoil's Ea oil filters are good for 15,000-25,000 miles, depending on which particular type. This goes well with their upper tier oils which are also rated for 15,000 or 25,000 miles, depending on which oil. The Mobil1 filter is also decent but I only trust that up to about 12,000 miles.

And, no, you do not need to use an oil filter with synthetic media if you use synthetic oil.

I used to use Amsoil and I still think it is very good. I have switched to Pennzoil Ultra because I believe it to be one of the very best oils for any price. I normally use Purolator Pure One filters. I change at 5K miles which I'm sure is too soon, but it makes me feel good. Oil is cheaper than metal.

I actually just mentioned this in another thread, but I heard from a non-profit automotive newsletter a couple years ago that Royal Purple, Redline, and Motul were the only true full synthetics and even Mobil-1 Full Syn was really still a blend. Idk if its true anymore, but I still use Mobil-1, however I think I'm making the switch to Royal Purple next. I like it. Have used it in other high performance applications before and it has done great.

While i agree that Amsoil's one of, if not the best. Back at the end of summer i switched from M1 to RP. I've not driven it enough since to tell from performance etc. if there's much difference. I don't drive my stang in the winter.

Now back when I had my 350z i switched it over to Amsoil (back in like 2005 when amsoil didn't have so many product lines) and I could 100% tell a difference in the car instantly. I mean the first time I started the car after the change over the idle was much more smooth and quieter. I picked up about 1.5-2 mpg as well. It was quite dramatic improvement over the dino oil previously used.

The nice thing about RP is that I can get it local and it's cheaper than Amsoil.

Same with Pennzoil Ultra. I get it at Wally World.
