Flowmaster Super 44's vs. Original 40's
So, in my quest to put together an affordable exhaust system that I like and that fits within my budget, I've narrowed the sea of choices to two mufflers I think I'll like (judging from what I could find about them).
So... My question is, which gives the more aggressive sound? A few years back, before I even had my car or could drive myself places (I was like 15), I was in a Northern bit of Virginia and saw a couple street runs between an S10 and a 4th gen Cobra (Yeah, it was a slaughter). Anyway, during the runs when this guy really stomped it, it was fukken loud, but the coolest part was after the run was over and he eased off, you could still hear the car echoing through the hills. Ever since I saw that, I wanted that.
Keeping that in mind, which one will produce the deeper and nastier muscle car rumble on an H-pipe?

look at the graph on the top. seems the super 44, super 40 and 40 delta are all the same. Keep in mind the Cobra you saw will not sound like your car. It's a DOHC vs your SOHC, and have read that flowmasters drone a lot. Are you running cats or no cats? That will play a role in the tone as well.
But to answer your question, I don't think there would be a huge differance between the two you are asking about. Look on youtube for clips of the setup you want.
Oh and I'm assuming a "4th Gen Cobra" is a 03-04??

Yeah, possibly 01-02. I just know it was decked out in Cobra trim and body pieces, and was the bodystyle of '99 - '04.

Well the 01 and 03-04's have a different front bumper. Then again it could have also been just a GT with cobra parts....but either way, those mufflers may not be that much different.
I'm thinking of going with 50 series with my catless x pipe. The 40's are too hollow sounding and have too much of a metallic sound. Plus I have heard the drone is something horrible.

Hmmm... What about Race 40s? Have you heard/heard about those any at all? One of the nice things about WV is we don't actually have a law-defined decibel limit. Practicality could be an issue to some, but I was never very good with that

I really dont mind the drone.. Hell it keeps me awake, lol.. I like the flows.. A. They aren't that exspensive. B. I really like how they sound with the H-pipe.. The only negative thing that I've heard about the flows is that they do tend to rust.. but like everyone has said OP, check out a couple sound clips on You Tube. That should really help your decision..

Thank you kindly. I absolutely loved the said exhaust on my 05gt. I has/had a beautiful deep tone and well all I can say is it was perfect on the 4.6. I should have gone the same route with the new car but I read somewhere that they do not sound all that great on a 5.4 s/c. It made/makes no sense I know but I went with MagnaFlow and boy do I miss the 40's. I took the car from Calgary to Winnipeg and back (1500ish miles) and the drone was not an issue for me or my wife. I notice some exhaust these days when floored or pumped has a raspy sound and to me that can't compare to the deep throaty muscle car sound (40 Flows) of yore.
