Are exhaust cutouts harmful?

Are exhaust cutouts harmful?
Hello.
So I've been thinking about getting exhaust cutouts because any sort of mod that changes the factory tone of the car is illegal where I live.
I've heard about exhaust cutouts that increase the car's sound but you can basically flip a switch and the exhaust tone will go back to stock.
What's making me hesitant is that it's supposedly not good for your engine in the long run because of increased back pressure or for whatever other reason.
Anyone with any sort of knowledge can help me out? What good brands are out there?
My car is an '05 GT.
