Exhaust on a stock fox

Exhaust on a stock fox
I have a low mileage 87 GT I want to keep relatively stock, but the current exhaust system needs some attention and I would like to improve the sound. I really like the sound of an o/r h pipe and super 44 cat back. For a stock 5.0 engine will this set up hurt low end torque? because I really don't want to sacrifice too much in that area.
I noticed most aftermarket applications are all 2.5", will going to this from 2.25 (what I currently have) cause a drop in low end? Also do cats help maintain low end torque or is the back pressure thing really a myth?
Oh and I planned on keeping the factory shorty headers for now.
Please if you have experience or more knowledge in this area share your thoughts.

I don't think you will even notice the slight drop in torque, if anything, you'll be gaining torque. Plus it'll sound much faster lol. That backpressure / loss of low end torque reasoning mostly applys to running open headers at the track. A good aftermarket exhaust will help everywhere, no matter where the tach needle is. Good luck on your shopping, and post back with your thoughts on it when it's done.

Thanks for your response. So you think I should gain torque everywhere, even in the lower revs right?
See, I was all set on UEL headers, and off-road h and a cat back but I saw a bunch of threads about going with too much exhaust for the engine and losing in the low end of the powerband because of pipe diameter and exhaust scavenging/velocity and all that. I guess I'm just worried about losing some of the seat of the pants feel for regular street driving.

OK so I went with the 2.5inch. A BBK catted H and flowmaster cat back with super 44's on it. All came to my door in a week As for the headers, I pulled them off the car because I could hear a leak and found that it was leaking at the head on two of the primaries. They looked to be in great shape though so I decided to get new gaskets and keep the stock manifolds. Just going to paint them up and put them back on. Cant wait to hear how it all sounds, I'll report back..
Any recommendations for painting the OEM headers?
