Why does everyone go with 20X8.5 for front?

Why does everyone go with 20X8.5 for front?
Just curious as to why everyone with 20" aftermarket wheels usually have 8.5 width in the front, and 10" in the back?
Shelby and Saleen both offer 20X9 for the front rims, so there must not be a fitment issue there, right?
What size tire can you use on the front with a 9" rim?

People like the staggered look. Wider rims/tires in the rear. In addition, many wheels dont come in 20 x 9 but rather 20 x 8.5. Fitment depends on the specific wheels/tires and suspension. with the 20 x 9 people usually run between 245-285 width and usually a 30-40 tall.

Yeah, I know its for the staggered look- but it seems like the 8.5's look narrow to me tucked up under the GT fender.
The best look I've seen is 20X9, and 20X10 with 255/35 up front, and 285/30 out back.

I went with the 20x8.5 up front becasue the wheels i have were not offered in a 20x9 The differance in tire width between a 8.5" wide wheel and a 9" wide wheel is going to be minimal.
