#2 Optimization of traction/weight for going straight:
Wider tires in the back give you better traction at launch. But you don't need wider tires up front. Wider tires in the front is just excess weight, and too wide of a tire up front causes clearance problems. So, the solution is narrower tires in the front than the rear. Look at any serious drag race car and that's what you'll see. Skinny tires in the front and fat ones in the back.
...that brings us back to #1 becasue a lot people want to emulate the race / musclecar /hot-rod look by having large tires in the back and narrower ones in the front.
The obvious downside is that staggering makes rotating tires much more difficult. If your tires have directional tread then you can't rotate them at all unless you have them de-mounted and re-mounted again.
