BMR LCA's - Silicone Grease
During your LCA install do you use silicone grease to grease the bushings via the zerk fittings? If so, doAutzone, pep boys, etcsell silicone grease in tubes that can be used in grease guns?
Did you also use white lithium grease to lube the bushing sleeve? Thanks! |
RE: BMR LCA's - Silicone Grease
Yes, you use silicone grease. Your LCAs should have come with some little packets for the install.
I have not seen it at most auto parts stores. You can buy it from Energy Suspension, Prothane, or from some of the suspension vendors like BMR. |
RE: BMR LCA's - Silicone Grease
Thanks all...no dice any any where on silicone greasecartridges except on the net.
Auto zone etc sell synt Mobile 1 grease. I don't know if that is okay but I called BMR and they said that it is or "should be."The lack of confidence was notconfidence building. I have my doubts because even thoughMobil 1says "synth" it still has a grease type smell. There are no contents listed on the Mobil 1 synth cartride either. |
RE: BMR LCA's - Silicone Grease
Synthetic is not the same thing as silicone.
Synthetic is synthetic oil was used to make the grease, but it's still oil. This will eat up the polyurethane just the same as regular old grease will. (Grease is just oil mixed with a thickener) When you called BMR you must have got a less-than-knowledgeable person on the phone. There is no substitute for silicone grease for poly suspension parts. |

Spohn sells it for $15 for 14oz i think. That should be enough to do whatever you want.

RE: BMR LCA's - Silicone Grease
I got my BMR adj. LCAs today and there were no packets of silicone grease. Nor does the install instructions mention anything about using grease...So do I need to wait to install my LCAs until I get my hands on some silicone grease and a grease gun??? Or will it be okay for a couple of days until the grease arrives???
Are the zerk fittings the standard fitting on a grease gun, or do I need to get the correct fitting as well??? Finally, do I need to put any litium grease or anything like that in the bolt hole in the bushing to keep it from squeaking??? Thanks... |
RE: BMR LCA's - Silicone Grease
The BMRs may be pre-greased. I do not remember. Take a look and seeif there is any visiblesilicone. It is acloudy-clear color and is very sticky. If you don't see any of that,I would get some grease just to be sure. My advice is to do it right.
The Zerk fittings are standard. You do not need an adapter. Do not use a petroleum based grease anywhere near a polyurethane bushing. When you say "lithium" that is not specific. Lithium is just the thickener added to the grease. More than likely you have lithium-thickened petroleum grease, which is extremely common. This is a no-no if it could touch the poly. On the other hand, if you have lithium-thickened silicone grease, that would be OK...though that stuff is quite rare. If you are unsure what you have, there is a 99% certaintly that it's plain 'ol petroleum grease, and I wouldn't use it. If I were you I'd play it safe and get some known-good silicone grease. |

This guy is in the middle of a project and has to stop for questions like this. |

By the way CrazyAl, thanks for always helping out on these sorts of things.

RE: BMR LCA's - Silicone Grease
I'm confused....if it has the zerk fitting to grease the LCA how would a grease packet help??? would you just put it into the bolt hole??? I mean the bushings are already in the arm so I am not sure what I am to do??? Do I just grease the zerk fitting??? Or do I also put grease in the bolt hole???
Also, do I grease the rod end as well, or just the poly end? Al, I and everyone can't say enough how much we appreciate your info. Hell, I hear about your helpfulness on forums that I don't even think you go to, but your repurtation preceeds you!!!! |
