another wheel and tire question
 
I'm finally gonna break down and put a set of wheels and tires on. My thoughts are 18x9 with 20x10 in the rear. I was going to go with chrome bullet wheels as it gives the stang that "old school" style I like so much. I was thinking about running 2754020 tires in the rear but that is 1.5 bigger than the stock overall diameter. Will this affect the gas mileage, transmission and rear axle negatively as I don't have a tuner. I know some of you will say go with 2753520 but I don't want to put a 35 series tire on Michigan roads. When I went 1.8 inches bigger o.d. on my chevy blazer I lost about 80 miles per gallon and I believe it caused trans issues, but was never able to prove it. I don't want to make the same mistake with my cherished mustang. Also if anyone can post pictures of the 18-20 staggered look it will help me with my decision. My other option is a set of 20's with 2454020 so I can rotate the tires.Or a different size 20 in the rearAny thoughts, pictures or comments I would greatly appreciate.

Not sure if you should go with a 2 inch difference from front to back. Might I suggest going with a 19's in front and 20's in the back. Maybe 18's in the front and 19's in the back (like the vettes) and than the 40 series tires in the back won't make you over the stock height too much at all. The last option you suggested is great as well and you can rotate the tires and save money in the long run. I am in MI as well and have 30 series tires all the way around and only regret not getting 35 series in the front for a tad more lift. I will make this easy for you. Get 18s all around with 40 profile or bigger and then your ass will that you and the car will not rattle apart.

I run Nitto 555 255/45/18(18x9's frt) and 295/45/18(18x10's rear).I think it has an old school look.And the ride is really nice.Wheels are dd AR Torque Thrust D's.
My fuel mileage didn't suffer and my speedo still reads the correct MPH.I can't figure that one out at all.My buddy is hiway patrol and checked it with his speed gun.

Hi Poco,

No doubt the wheels and tires on your car have an old school look to them. Do you have any room behind the spokes for bigger brake calipers? From the photos it looks like there is no space on the rear of the spoke faces for a larger caliper and no room for a 14"rotor either.

As I posted in the other thread unless you have a hand held tuner or your car was dyno tuned and the tuner corrected fortire revolutions in the ECU your speedo isoff and yourHighway Patrol buddy's radar gun is giving away revenue in the county which he patrols.Your comment has be changed to give your statement more authority but this just smells like B.S. to me. The stock speedo's are very accurate and if you feed the correct number into the ECU for a given tire the speedo can be dead on with less than 1% error in reading if you measure your tires accurately and progam the ECU with the revs per mile. A Nitto 295/45x18 should be turning 734 times per mile and the stock 27 tall tires turn 770 times per mile. Based on this set of facts your speedo is off reading slow at least 5%and possibly more depending on what wheels the car was shipped with.

Well I took it to the dealership for a check up and the speedo works just fine(I had it dynoed also).My ride was shipped with 18" Bullitts if that helps you any.I'm not changing my comment to just clear the B.S. you smell,I'm not the one complaining.
Also,the brakes work just fine and the clearance is tight,I have no intentions of changing a brake assembly that only have 10,000 miles on them.I'm sure the engineers at Ford came up with an adequate system for stopping the S-197.
