What do UCA/LCA's really do?

I've been searching all morning trying to find out what control arms really do and I just end up getting confused. So far I understand that they're obviously an impotant suspension upgrade and they're even more important if you are lowered for correcting pinion angle. I was also reading that they're good for drag racing, why is that? Sorry for the noob question, I just wanted to know what I can expect before buying something because people told me I should.

Two great links - after reading them they inspired me to start rereading my copy of Racing and Sports Car Design by Costin & Phipps!
