Default Safe DR size for stock rims

Have 05 w/stock rims (Split-five-spoke) I think these are 8 inch, please correct me if I am wrong. I need to put a set of DOT DR on the back and am getting conflicting info from my local tire dealers.

What size DR can I run on these rims? (safely of course) If I believe Bell tire, I have but one choice 255/50/17bfgoodrich. If I believe Discount tire I can run 275/40/17 Micky Ts...but according toMicky Ts web site these tires are not for 8 inch rims.

Thanks

I have used 17x8 Bullitts with 275/40/17 Mickey Thompson ET street radials for about a year with no issues, that being said I only use them at the track (where they kick a**), no street use except on the way to track. If I go to another track which is much further away I stow them in trunk then put them on there, mainly to minimize wear and tear. The BFGs are good street tires but they aren't that great at the strip, Hoosier and M/T if you are serious about drag racing.

Street use assumes possible unexpected hard cornering and extended highway driving, for which 8" wheels and 275/40 tires are a poor combination (think "reduced lateral support" and "increased sidewall flexing & heat generation", respectively).

You can probably "get away with" that combination, if you limit the use specifically to the dragstrip. But on a wheel that the mfr himself considers to be too narrow you may not be getting all of the grip(or the life) that the tire has to give onwheels of the "measuring width".
