The MaxQData GPS unit isn't perfect since it has to calculate lateral G's based upon approximation of vehicle path over time and doesn't use an internal accelerometer, but...I think it gets extremely close.

FWIW, it says I maxed out at about 1.1 lateral G's using 245/45R18 Dunlop Z1's at a concrete surface autocross site. I have no trouble believing, if that is true, that you could hit 1.2 or even higher with 275 section width street tires. They would need to be aggressive street tires, but street tires nonetheless.

I'm also relatively confident that I could have done that without any suspension modifications - just tires (ok, and maybe front camber - still cheap). I would notice the lack of suspension mods the moment I had to try and transition the car into the next corner.

Cool! Did I read you right, zero2sixd, you are using the MQGPS? I don't want to hijack the thread, but are you happy with it for the most part?

To come back to the thread, when you said you saw readings of 1.1 lateral G's, was that instantaneous or continuous? For that matter, was Steeda's claim instantaneous or continuous? I ask mainly because I had not seen their figures go over .97g, but it was almost a year ago that I read that on their site (and I'm pretty sure that was continuous).

And yeah, your suspension mods would be sorely missed once you tried to transition, and that's where all the fun happens! Aside from the 1.5" drop jymontoya is looking for, this is where he'll be chasing that Cooper feel (not in a given set-up's continuous G capability).

Best,
-j

The 1.1 G measurement was peak but, for example, during that same turn it was always above 1.0 when I was actually turning and not braking or accelerating. If I'm doing things right, I should have a very brief period of peak lateral G since the goal is to either be braking or accelerating and spending as little time as possible actually turning.

I've been happy with the MQGPS so far. It was the cheapest way I could find to start collecting data on my driving. Also, for those of you that are drag racers (and even if you aren't it's still fun) it will spit out very accurate 1/4 mile time slips even if you're not at the drag strip. (Standard disclaimer applies: don't do this on the street blah, blah, blah.)

Sorry about also highjacking the thread but I'm glad to hear to like the MQGPS. I just ordered the MQGPS Hi Def along with their video system http://www.maxqdata.com/VeQtr.htm

Can't wait to try it out.

Terrible, terrible men we are...but I can't resist.

Mine is on order in another week or two! I'm excited, and I have the same motivation as zero2sixd. For the array of data provided, I haven't found anything to match it for the price. I would have gone Sleeper_08's route, but I already have the camera, camera-mount, pda, and laptop.

Ok, jymontoya, to make up for this, at least by mid-summer between the three of us we should have a variety of data sets for you to look at along with our respective suspension mods. My first event is coming up in mid-May. My peace offering to you.

Best,
-j

Wow, that thing is pretty cheap. I was gonna hold out for a year or two and get a TraqMate setup. I might have to pick up one of those things to hold me over...

Thanks for the help guys...

I've added it all up, and I could pretty much do the full Steeda kit for the price of all this... Think that's the way I'm going to go... I think their 1.25" drop should suffice...
