Does Anyone Use 17 Inch Wheels Anymore
#11
+1 on what rodeoflyer said.
There are some very cheap 255/50/17 tires out there. I'm running an off brand and they cost less than $90 a tire. There is a Nitto 275/50/17 but that is a 28" tire and there are many very cheap 275/40/17 but that is a 26" tire.
What type of driving do you do? If it is a lot of city pothole ridden roads, 20's and 18's might knock you around too much and risk rim damage. If you do only highway and smooth roads, then bigger rims will give you the look you want.
Less side wall can improve turn in and less roll-over, however, you will loose grip if the side wall is too short because it lacks flex.

If you are looking for wide tires on the street then a 255 is going to be your best size but that isn't the widest you can go. I run 275/40R17 on my race rims, but they are not for the street. A 275 is not a skinning tire, plenty wide enough for these cars and that size is a the best budget priced tire out there for performance(i.e. R-comp) tires.
I think Hoosier makes performance tires up to a 305 for a 17" rim.

Thanks everyone for all your thoughts on this. I've decided I'm going to go back to the 18's. It wasn't an easy choice though, but the deciding factor was I wanted to run a wider tire than what the 17's could offer in the style rim I was looking at. The style rim I was looking at only comes in a 17x7 size. That really limited me on the size tire I could run.
