Thanks for all the replies back everyone. The tires are Eagle F1's with 50 miles on them. They are a 40 tire. I dont know I just might not get them if they are too wide for the stock rim.

I have 275/40/17 M/T drag radials mounted on 17x8 stock bullits, I only use these when going to track, I wouldn't go with a daily street tire that wide, I got the 255/50/17s Kumho SPT, they are great and almost as wide as 275, plus the aspect ratio is more similiar to stock, the drag radials are 40s so they really pronounce the gap in the rear between fender and tire height. If you are lowered its not an issue but I am not so I wanted to keep the stock stance as much as possible.

IMHO

The issue is heat generation in the tire sidewalls due to extra flexing where the sidewalls are "pinched in" a bit to fit into the wheel. While you can probably get away with the combination of 275/40 on 8" for low speed driving or extremely limited durations of harder driving (followed by some "cool-down" time), it is really not a good idea for either extended trips or hot climate conditions.

275/40-17 is about an inch and a half shorter than the OE S197 tires. That's definitely enough to notice, even if the car is lowered.
