a buddy of mine cut his springs on his nissan 240 for fun because it was a beater, that car was bouncy as hell! i cant even begin to describe how bouncy the ride was hahah. it would bounce and hit the floor periodically. eventually i think one of the springs popped out. bad idea, the car was worthless anyhow.

yeah like everyone above said, just buy springs, you'll be better off that way. You can even pick up off brand springs or used springs off of craigslist. A set of of K-Sport Springs can be had for like 150

For situations where the spring compression 'x' due to displacement input (bumps and other roadway unevennesses) remains essentially constant, the amount of energy corresponding to that displacement goes up as a function of K. The volume of 'active' metal in the spring goes down (by approximately a function of K), so U/V goes up by ~K^2. I think there's a section in Marks' handbook that covers this topic - it's been a while since I went through it and I don't have my 7th Edition handy.

I'd certainly expect that any spring that can be cut successfully starts out having a greater margin against its 'safe load' than one that can't. I have no idea where the OE springs fall in this regard.
