Default 275/55r17 - Will these fit on 17x8 rims?

I'm trying to find the tallest side wall available for 17x8 rims. My plans for 15s are basically out the window for now. So, would 275/55r17s fit on 17x8 wheels for the rear? If not, then what is the tallest tire we could fit on our cars for the rears?

I've done countless searches but they only seem to cover rim/tire width or are back from 06 with no pics.

Thanks

Size-wise, it's apparently an acceptable 'fit' per tire mfr recommended range of wheel widths. Not mane to choose from, and most are intended as light truck tires.

A tire guy claimed that the 275 will fit on a 8 inch rim but the tire would not sit flat on the pavement across unless you reduced air preasure. A nine inch rim would be better. I have a question for you if you run the 55 series wouldnt your drive ratio change to a higher ratio with the oversize tire and also your tires speed rating would change with a truck tire too. You would be better off going with a 15 inch or a 16 inch tire if you want the drag race look. I think you will have to relocate the sway bar to do that, Just a thought!

Yeah, I started this thread thinking 17's would be 'cheaper' than 15s, which they are, it's just the damn cost of the TIRES, lol. Especially the 26x6x15 for the skinnies. Well, I couldn't even find those rims on sell by themselves, which is why I wanted to settle with 17's and get a taller rear tire, or so I thought

Yeah, truck tires would slow me down. I wouldn't want to shell out that much cash to be any slower.

I'll be sticking with my stockers for now. I tried buying the Eagle #1 Nascar tires with the raised white letters, but no one carries those anymore.

Thanks for the help

I think you'd be pushing it with 275's on 8" rims. Plus, 275/55/17's are very tough to find besides the larger-than-the-stock-tire O.D.

Hey Nuke, glad to see you here. I was kinda hoping you'd chime in, lol

I've been looking at 15s, 16s and even 17s (Not really a fan). My head is everywhere with this project. Anyways, I just came across some tires that are 215/70/15. Do you think those would fit my rear stockers? Would 215/75r15s be too tall of a tire?

i am completely lost on what you are doing here. Either you dont have a an knowledge on tires and how they work or you are looking for tires for a set of 17" rims or maybe buying 15" rims?

and yes 215/75/15 is really tall. Like 3" bigger diameter than stock

215's are pretty skinny. Go to tirerack.com and look at the specs on various tires. Howarmat sort of hit the nail on the head; you need to have a better understanding of tire sizing before you mistakenly buy a tire that won't do what you need (or even look right).

Also, PM me with your e-mail. I have a spreadsheet that you can plug your current tire size and new size and it'll give you a graphic comparison along with all the data comparisons.

****, I meant to say 215/70r16.

Well, I've learned ALOT about tires and rims in the past 72 hours, lol. The only aftermarket pair of rims and tires I had was on my old New Edge. And even back then I really didn't know much about Mustangs, which is why I joined the forums.

I heard 20's drag you down a bit, so I figured 17's and 18's must as well compared to 16's. You know what, I dont know **** about tires, and I DO feel embarassed to say/type that, lol. I do plan on doing major engine work in the near future (with some help) and just want the tires to 'hook' as best as they can.

Honestly, if I could just find a 'beefier' rear tire for my stockers, I'd be fine. Which is why I originally wanted 15" rims. I wasnt really sure what excatly 215/70r16 meant until about an hour ago. I'm a n00b when it comes to wheels. Simply put, I just dont want rubberbands wrapped around my rim

I'm sure you'll figure it out. Best to ask quaetions and get yourself straight instead of buying the wrong thing.
