How Forged Wheels are Made - Video
As many of you know, forged wheels tend to be very strong, very light weight and very expensive. I've always wondered how they were made and why they cost so much...now I know.
I came across this video on streefire the other day. The video is about the Lamorghini Murcielago SV production line. Its very cool to watch but the part I'm talking about begins at the 37 minute mark.
Alcoa is a wheel manufacturer in Clevelad, Ohio. They make the one piece wheels for the Murcielago. The video shows how they start with a 45kg disc (billet) of aluminum, heat it and then press it under tons of pressure into a semblence of a wheel. From there it's machined, finished and powder coated into a finisned product.
Pretty cool stuff - thought some of you might enjoy. If nothing else, after viewing you should be able to tell why they cost so much.

I actually saw the whole thing. Very nice. Thanks.
The mental picture that always came to my mind whenever I heard about "forged" wheels was that of some old, grime-covered dude, hammering away at a piece of metal in a fiery forge, shaping it into a wheel.
