Default 55D Springs on Brembo Brake Mustangs

On December 2nd our first shipment of the pre-ordered 55D Springs shipped to Brembo Brake Mustang owners.

Here are a few recent quotes that I wanted to share from those that bought and installed the 55D Springs on their 2011-12 Mustangs that posted on the Brembo50.com message board:

“The 55D springs does just what it suppose to do , keeps the stock ride with a small ride height change in the back of the car to even the air gaps out over the front and rear tires. Thank You, you did a great job with the springs !!!”

“Its hard to believe that that small lowering amount makes any difference but it seems to.” Thanks for all your hard work, it really show that you want to make a difference for all of us.

“The results are great. The car sits with less noticeable rake and feels more taught and solid.”

I like your screen name "Bucephalus" - let me guess, your Mustang is black and your real name is Alexander :-)

What are the performance benefits of the 55D springs?

The lowered 1/2" REAR Spring height equalizes the “center of gravity” front to rear for improved handling, thus allowing the car to feel "flatter" going into corners and provides confidence to the driver at the wheel.

However, this is really a secondary benefit. The 55D Spring Kit was designed primarily for the improved look and keeping the stock ride quality.

I'll take the appearance and ride quality aspects at face value.

But they will do virtually nothing as far as moving the CG is concerned. If they're slightly stiffere than the OE springs, they'll shift the roll couple distribution rearward (which can be a good thing if not overdone). But that's a completely different animal.

Well i ran the steeda sport spring the stock BBP spring and i'am now on the stock BBP springs in the front and the 55D in the back . The steeda sport feel like they make the car understeer a little bit but my bigest knock is back of car is not that good on taking big bumps 80+ MPR rear end bottems out on the bounce stops and give a hard blow to your lower back . I have to go over this bump everyday to go to work on the I-15 it got old after a year. I when back to the stock BBP springs (why i was waiting for the 55D spring to come) and the bump when way . Now on testing on a left hand turn at 90 to 100 MPR bouth the BBP & 55D springs track through the correr easer than the steeda springs (thinking there less undestreering) but the 55D springs with the stock BBP springs in the front of the car , this felt better to me than the other 2 springs .The 55D springs also can take the Big bumps with out rear end hiting the bounce stops so for me and my back this set-up is the best . The car looks the best with steeda spring but with the 55D spring the car has a look i can live with . BBP springs I Hate the way the car looks . So it 55D spring fo me now . It sucks getting old .

I hear you on that last item .

Out of curiosity, do you know what the rates of those springs are?

There 167 lb. the spring maker said they have the same working spring rate over there travle as the BBP rear spring has . To me they feel the same going over bumps as the BBP spring but that 1/2 drop make the car feel better in high speed truns to me . I got Koni STR.T struts & shock on the car to.

That half inch drop shifts the rear axle roll steer geometry slightly, and that's almost certainly what's responsible for the change in "feel" that you describe. It's in the direction of adding a little more understeer, without adding so much as to make the car start feeling clumsy or unwilling to be put through slalom or sudden lane change maneuvers.

Thanks for the spring rate data.
