For those autocrossers...Mustang to STU?
#31
I know if it does happen it'll cost me $2,600 in wheel and tire upgrades just to try and keep up with the STU guys. But if you read the beginning of the fast track it states that the changes won't come into effect until 1/1/2015. But later on it states something about 1/1/2014 for the STU issue. So I guess I'll just have to wait and see next year on what class I'll be running. I better start saving my money now though in case they change it.

I plan on starting with this:

and then seeing where to go from there.

It will be frustrating if the move happens because I bought my 18x9 wheels and 265 tires just to max out STX. I built my car for that class. I might not perform well at a National level but locally I can keep up with and sometimes beat the STX and STU guys who also take is seriously. I'll just have to wait until January to see if they really change the class.

So the primary differences between STX and STU are the STU have no restriction on wheel size?
I guess I don't understand the controversy because I'm really new at autocross..
I do wish they had a SM class for muscle cars (FSM), because there's no way a Mustang can compete with the other cars that are typically found in that class - especially a 6cyl Mustang.

The difference is wheel and tire sizes. As you said, for STU the mustang can have an unlimited wheel size. It can also run a tire as wide as 285 instead of the 265 in STX. Everything else is the same rule wise.

The problem is the increase in the PAX factor for the class. It increases so much that trying to compete is no longer possible unless you have deep pockets to max out the class. Of course this is a regional issue not national. The SCCA is only concerned with the national events and don't use the PAX. I'm like darksky1984, acquired 18x9s for 265s and now would need a larger wheel to properly fit a 285 size tire that won't make a difference.
