Chunks of rubber missing from tires...is this a problem?
I'm looking at some newer GT500 wheels and tires for my '09 GT and see that the previous owner appears to have had lots of fun with the rear tires. I'm hoping to get at least a summer's worth of driving from the tires that are on the wheels befor replacing them. I attached a photo. Are the missing pieces a problem that would mean immediate replacement?

I'm no expert but if it were me I'd rationalize it by saying the missing chunks aren't lower than the tread so no harm done.
I'd lowball him on the price for it though.

What size and brand of tires and how old are they? My coworkers tire disintegrated randomly, i think it was a dunlop and it lost like large amounts of tread. This tire looks like it rubbed the fender a bit near the edges, not sure about the chunks missing though.

OP, how does the tread where it meets the sidewall look? The picture you have is a bit blurry.
Is it all cracked and old looking like this? http://coachspecialists.com/mainsite...14/04/tire.jpg or does it look fine?
If it's dry rot, the tires are toast and should not be used. They can blow out at any time. If they are fine, then you should be okay with the chunks taken out, just have them balanced before you use the tires.
