Spring, shock, and rear sta-bar stiffnesses all figure in as to how much clearance is actually necessary to cope with whatever conditions any specific car encounters.
The exact contour of the tire's shoulder region definitely matters, with a more gradually rounded shape being better for clearance (at a slight sacrifice in contact patch tread width). Even this lunch counter isn't free.

I agree. Offset is the most important aspect. I ran 20x11 Steeda Spyder wheels with Nitto Invo 315/35 out back and had no issues. You also have to make sure your rear is properly centered. Panhard bar will do that, cause once you drop it, it will go off center.
