Tire Size Question

Tire Size Question
I know there aren't many SN95 guys on here, but I have a quick question. I have 275/35/18's on my 8.5" Magnesium Speedline wheels. Question is this: Has anyone tried to put 285's on those rims? I'm probably going to be putting new tires on the car and I would like to put 255's on the front and 285's on the back. Thoughts?

RE: Tire Size Question
I am going to agree with red here, 285's are too large for a 8.5" rim (even if they were installed by Saleen) I think you are getting into an un-safe arena with that much tire on an 8.5" rim as well as poor handling.

RE: Tire Size Question
Sal.
Again,
I have been running 285's on 8.5 inch wheels for years on over 10 different vehicles and combo's. A 285 will actually be too narrow ( unless it's a BFG 285-31-18 ) since that brand runs wider on a 10. Most 285's will be stretched too far on a 10 inch wheel. I know because i have been there, done that. Just a thought.

RE: Tire Size Question
And the answer is..............................................
Maybe.
Tires vary between manufacturers, depending on design and use. I've seen the "same size" tire vary up to an inch between manufacturers.
The best answer would be to go to the tire manufacturer's website and see what THEIR recommended wheel width range is. They ALL list that spec.
With that said, people do sometimes know more than the tire maker's lawyers, and mount tires outside the recommended specs. That's YOUR call...

RE: Tire Size Question
Thanks for all the responses guys. I know Marcus has had a few of the SN95 cars, so I'm probably going to go with the 265/285 combo on the car. I'm actually pretty stoaked that 265's will fit on the front. I'm a wide tire all the way around type of guy, so I'll press the envelope as much as I can. I like the steam roller look, big-n-littles are pretty stupid looking in my opinion. Thanks again...
BTW Marcus - what were the exact sizes 265/35/18 and 285/35/18 (you might have posted it above, I just can't see it while I'm writing this response. If so, ignore the question...)
Thanks again...

Sal.
you can go with a 265-35 and 285-30 or a 285-35 depending on the tire. It's going to be up to you how much sidewall you want.
Just do yourself a favor and like Bob mentioned before you have tires mounted just check out the sidewall height before you pull the trigger because you onlt want these guys to dismount and remount your new tires on those mags once. They get chipped really easy. For example, a BFG in a 265 will run as wide as a 275 in a Michelin. The BFG KD's in a 285 out back will be almost as wide as most brands 295's. Trust me, when you get the tire ready depending on how wide or narrow it runs you will be able to see it right then and there. If you shop on TireRack and give a local America's Tire co. that price, most of the time they will almost match it. In fact, when you compare the shipped price of a tire from tirerack it will pretty much match what America's Tire or Discount Tire will sell it to you for.

Funny thing is, Marcus is actually the one who tipped me off to wider rims on another post... Thanks Marcus

RE: Tire Size Question
Jazz.
You know I'm a wide rear wheel ****.There's nothing better than leaving a couple of nice wide black ones from a set of 315's.
Sal's problem is he has been looking for a set of 10 inch rear Speedline mags for a while. Until he does that he's stuck.
Sal, when you have the tire off that 8.5 you will notice it runs a little wider than 8.5 anyway. Italian thing. You will be fine for now.
