1988 Saleen !?
Hello Everyone,
I have the opportunity to purchase a 1988 Ford Saleen Mustang from a family member and was wondering if you could give me a little info on what you think this car might be worth. It is an Arizona car with less than 40,000 miles on it. I would say it is in Good/Fair condition. It needs a paint job badly as it sat in the Arizona sun for years and is black. It is mechanically in OK conidition. I know the fuel pump was recently replaced on it. He is the 2nd owner and has probably put 3,000 miles on it since it was purchased used in the early 90's.
My questions are...
What do you think it is worth?
How much would a good paint job cost?
What are some typical things to look for on 1988 Mustangs and are there any problems typically associated with them?
How expensive/hard is it to find parts for these cars?
Thanks!

NADA goes back to 1989 and says 9-13k for a 3 door hatch. So in this economy, a year older and the condition you describe I would guess$7-10K?
I had a 1988 GT which is essentially what the Saleen is. The only issue I ever had was clutch chatter. Great car otherwise.
Paint will depend on what kind of body work, body kit or rust repair if needed. My guess $4-8k.
If it has on ly been driven 3,000 miles in 16 or so years do you know if it was stored correctly? Was it started regularily? You could end up with surprise mechanical expenses if it was not stored right.
Hope this helps.

Wow I am really surprised at how much a paint job costs. My uncle who owns it would start the car regularly and took good mechanical care of it; he owns a few older Corvettes as well which he keeps good care of.

The value is want you are willing to pay for it - there a several places you can get a "ball park" number - NADA is one, ebay and craigslist are good too. Check with your bank on load value and your insurance company on insured value. Where it is located can also affect the value.
Pretty much everything is somone's opinion, like I said, it's what you are willing to pay for it.
Something to consider, what it will be worth when brought back, after the paint and interior work.
Here's a couple on the market on just off for comparison,
88 Black Hatch in Washington
87 red hatch
