4.6L General Discussion This section is for non-tech specific information pertaining to 4.6L (Modular) Mustangs built from 1996 to 2004.

Why did Ford replace the 5.0 to 4.6???

Anyways, I've seen Evo's make over 800hp with 2.3L of displacement...something Mustang owners(specifically OHC motors) struggle to achieve. Its all in how the engine is designed and built. Ford just so happened to finally have gotten it right with the 2011 5.0 that it makes good n/a power and is a monster under boost.

What I meant was why did Ford go to the 4.6 instead of the 5.0 The amount of $ spent on R/D on the 4.6 would far out exceed modifying the 5.0. I realize any motor can be modified but why not upgrade the 5.0? I have always been told there is no replacment for displacment..

99-04 4.6 260hp/ fox body stang 5.0 215hp. 2011 5.0 412hp 6.0 ls2 400hp. both cases thats a smaller motor making more power. That no replacement for displacment still kinda stands and at the same time it kind of obviously dont stand anymore with new technology. Times change.

you got to remember the new 5.0 is a 4v ohc compared to the older pushrod 5.0's. just something to think about.

very true two total diff packages just share the same 5.0 nameplate the similarities stop there.

In the case of a purpose built race engine, that statement holds true because you can build the rest of the engine to fully take advantage of the cubes you have. In a productiom street car motor, you have to take into account fuel economy, emissions, drive ability, and cost. When your tuning for all of these things you can find ways to compensate for displacement.

with this new OHC engines you compensate for the loss in displacement... that's why the new 5.0 makes as much HP as the old 6.0 OHV

I wouldn't really call it a 'loss' in displacement. We humans want to do more with less. The modular v8 is a perfect example of that.

The 4.6 didn't replace the legendary 5.0. It simply held its place while it was under construction. Lol look at the 5.0 now, stock beast.
