Hey everyone! just got another 289 classic! but this time it's a 66.
Plan on a .30over bore

Im looking for 400+ hp high in the powerband

looking for a forged 302 crank and some 302 rods to toss in her.. and a camshaft.. any ideas? Also Do you think that parts list with shorty headers and a 700+ CFM carb will make it to at least 400HP? with a street driveable camshaft.. lol

If you're only going to 302...why bother? You're really not picking up any noticable power between a 289 and a 302, definitely not enough to justify the cost. If you jump to 331 or 347, that's a different story. The larger cubes will also help provide some streetable torque.

If you're going to spend that kind of money on heads, spend a little more and get something like Edelbrock RPM's or Trick Flow TFS heads. No sense skimping, you'll only regret it later.

Alright.. but any idea for a roller cam? what lift? ect.. to make at least 400HP and be able to drive on the street alot

Ford considered the change from 289 to 302 worth 11 hp. Removing the spare tire is probably more effective.

You want over 400 hp from a smallblock but you want it to be a practical driver? Bring money. Basically, you're trying to replicate the BOSS 302.

Ford Racing's M-6007-X302B engine is listed as 345 hp, and costs 7 grand. That's using the E303 roller cam. There are more powerful cams, but they are not what you'd expect to drive often.

I too, hate to be a buzz killer, but, you ain't gitt'in no 400 HP out of a 289/302. Now, as mentioned stroke to 331, add nice TFS/AFR heads (2.02/1.60s, 170/180 runners) , custom cam with .570+ lift, 10.5 CR, a 700'ish CFM carb, TRY's(?) duals, RPM intake, then, you may get close. All the while, it can be a nice street warrior. Right off the launching pad, you're talking $1500+ for the heads and custom valve train, $500 for custom billet roller cam and supporting hardware, $600-800 for custom intake system. This, while doing all of your own blue-print assembly. It's far cheaper and much faster to contact Ford Strokers....IMHO. Happy Motoring!

Hm.. will these heads fit on a 1966 289? I'm willing to buy them if they do! Also anyone know of a cheapish 100 or 75 NOS shot kit? I plan on wiring the switch to flip on at full throttle because I'll be using a gear vendors overdrive kit and don't feel like holding one button, steering, semi-auto shifting and hitting the gear vendor shift button at the same time

Just for some background here, have you ever driven a 400+ hp car? As impressive as the number sounds, one blip of the throttle can seriously kill you.
