Default Idling, burning smell, check engine light

I have a 2001 GT Mustang. Got into it this morning , first I noticed the RPMs starting dropping & going back up to where the car almost stalled out. Started smelling a burning smell shortly after but you can only smell it from inside the car & now the check engine light is on. No idea why my car is doing this!! Help!! .

step one would be check the vehicle for obvious signs of smoke or things leaking, next step would be scan the codes.. asking us what to do without being there with the car isnt going to help you at all

I am having and issue with my 98 gt. It hits the Rev limiter at 4000 rpm in neutral and while driving. It runs rough at idle and sputters and Jerks while driving. It also throws a p0340 code. I've changed the cam sensor and the alternator and it still throws the code. Anybody have any ideas?

make sure the cmp sensor connector and wiring are still intact, but sounds like you need to verify base engine timing. could have a timing/timing chain issue
