Default Can a bad cat mess up a new o2 sensor

I have a stock 01 Ford Mustang v6 and i think one of my catalytic converters is bad i want to change my o2 sensor to see if thats might be the problem but i dont want to buy the o2 sensor and and install it and it gets destroyed for a bad catalytic converters.

If it is down stream of the cat, it could.

If an O2 goes bad it throws a CEL. usually.
