Question Electric Power Steering Failing??

Hi everyone,

Spent some time looking through threads here and haven't really found what I'm looking for, so I hope someone can help.

I think my electric power steering motor/assembly is starting to give out - I think. This is the first car I've ever driven that uses one, so I'm not exactly sure if that's the issue or not. I've noticed some whining noise happening when I turn the wheel, which on my older cars would be an indication to put in more power steering fluid, but my 2014 3.7L V6 doesn't use it given that it has the electric power assist steering system. However, what I've found online (if correct) indicates that when that is starting to fail, I should be getting warning lights when it starts to go and I'm not.

Can anyone tell me if the whining is normal wear and tear for a mustang with 140k? Should I start looking at replacing the electric motor system? Is that something I can do or is that something that is best done via a shop? I've done basic oil changes, transmission change, brake changes, but I'm no professional. Any advice anyone can give me would be helpful - thanks!
