Default A couple carb questions

Ok I have a 750 Holley on a mild 302 setup. I have a feeling that the accelerator pump needs to be tinkered with because on the initial dip into throttle it hesitates or stumbles. So I think it may be the accelerator pump or I have also been thinking it is simply running to rich and overloading on fuel.

For this reason I plan of fixing this 1 of 2 ways. Take the holley off my car, re-jet it and maybe reabuild just outright rebuild the whole carb or grab a stock 650 from my brother in laws 85 GT. It allready has a fresh rebuild and whatnot.

So my question is this, is a 750 Holley to much carn for a mild 302 setup(edlebrock performer rpm/e cam/full exhaust.)

Yes. If it had annular boosters and an HP main body it could be toyed with and made to work right, but on that mild of a setup it's a monstrously huge carburetor. The stumble could be the accelerator pump, if it's running rich the pump is just adding to the problem. It could also be the idle circuit as well, larger carbs come with larger idle feed restrictors so they overfuel mild small engines that make higher idle vacuum. I'd bet that your idle mixture screws are barely a half turn out. And good luck trying to jet it correctly, the signal will be so weak that it's either gonna end up lean or rich somewhere in the curve.

So what do you suggest, a different carb all together?

The big question is which 750 Holley carb do you have? There are about a dozen differant 750 Holley carbs and there is a huge differance for one end of the spectrum to the other. The CFM rating is only part of the equation

Overhaul it, jet it correctly (read those spark plugs), spend some time tuning that squirter circuit and use it.

I think I may just swap on the 650 off of the 85 GT. Other than that let me ask. On the AOD's, if you do not have the kick down linkage on the car will it kill any kind of performance abilities of the transmission. Will it make it shift way to quickly from 2nd to 3rd?

Like it hangs in 1st to long then hits 2nd gear or what seems like a split second
then shifts to 3rd.

AOD's do not use a kick down lever, that would be the Throttle Valve (TV) lever. If you use the car w/out that valve connected/adjusted properly..... you could fry that AOD. Since you have a carb setup, check this information.....LUK
